Ramadan and Oral Health – What You Need To Know

Ramadan is one of the important religious obligations for Muslims. It is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar. During this month Muslims fast from dawn till sunset. The fast is broken by eating and drinking in the evening.

The fast is a good opportunity to make our life healthier and better. But what if we don’t drink water? How we will stay hydrated?

During the Ramadan the saliva secretion is reduced. Saliva plays an important role in the digestion process and keeps our mouth healthy. A healthy mouth is an essential part of a healthy life.

Ramadan is a very special period when the Muslims are fasting. But it will also affect your oral health. Some of the factors that can influence our oral health are:

  • Decreased salivary flow rate
  • Dry mouth
  • Gum diseases
  • Soreness of gums and teeth
  • Tooth decay
  • Bad breath
  • Food and beverage restrictions
  • Low humidity
  • Increased sugar level
  • Changes in sleeping habits

The above facts will make us thirsty during the fasting time. So, we have to follow some simple oral health tips to stay healthy and hydrated during the Ramadan.

Drink plenty of water

Most of the people will start drinking water immediately after the sunrise. But, before you drink water make sure that you have consumed the required amount of water during the day. It is very important to drink enough water as it will help you to avoid dehydration.

You need to consume about 2 litres of water a day to stay healthy.

Consume foods that are rich in calcium

It is very important to include foods like milk, yogurt, cheese, orange, green vegetables and beans in your diet. These foods will provide the required amount of calcium and will help you to stay healthy.

I hope you liked the post about Ramadan and oral health. I have shared some simple tips with you to stay healthy during the fasting time. Make sure that you drink enough water and eat food that is rich in calcium.
